Data Governance for Health Information Exchange

November 14, 2013

From EMRs to patient portals to mobile healthcare, today's healthcare organizations are drowning in a deepening sea of patient data-information that is increasingly exchanged across disparate organizations as the healthcare system continues to move toward a collaborative model of care.

As a result, data integrity is more crucial than ever. The only way to ensure short and long-term data integrity and compliant information exchange is to have in place at the outset a solid data governance policy and process. This is particularly true for any organization that is contemplating participation in an ACO or HIO.

Comprehensive governance policies will ensure that - regardless of volume and originating source - accurate, duplicate-free data are collected, maintained and managed in compliance with HIPAA and state privacy regulations. In the case of collaborative entities, governance policies also ensure that no single stakeholder receives preferential treatment and puts to rest any concerns competitors may have about how their patient information is utilized and treated by other stakeholders.

This webinar examined the growing importance of data governance policies in today's healthcare environment, as well as:

  • Considerations when crafting data governance policies
  • Assessing where data governance is needed
  • Determining what disciplines should be involved in policy development
  • Implementation and enforcement of the policies

Finally, this webinar examined why data governance is not only an IT issue; why it must involve input from multiple stakeholders and multi-functional planning committees/workgroups.
